I know many people think of ranch dressing as the king of dressings. I can’t blame anyone, because homemade thousand island goes so well with everything. However, I often get a mood for something different, and that is when this low carb keto salad dressing works perfectly. It’s creamy and zesty, just the way I like it.

You can top a cheeseburger with this dressing or add it to your favorite salad fixings. You honestly can’t go wrong using this on any of your favorite low carb recipes, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t lick the spoon. Don’t judge; it’s truly that good!

Ingredients

Chopped Dill Pickles

Sugar Free Ketchup

Mayo

Lemon Juice – I prefer to use fresh lemon juice but bottled is ok. If you don’t have either apple cider vinegar works well too.

Garlic Salt – A mix of garlic powder and salt is all you need to make the flavors of this easy keto friendly dressing pop. If you want you can add a bit of black pepper too.

Variations

Thickness – You can easily vary the thickness of this low carb thousand island dressing recipe. For a thicker dressing drain all the juice from the pickles and dry them with a paper towel before adding them. Omit the lemon juice or add some lemon zest instead. For a thinner dressing add a splash of unsweetened almond milk or heavy cream.

Common Questions

Is Store Bought Thousand Island Dressing Keto? Is There Sugar In 1000 Island Dressing?

Traditional thousand island dressings typically do have sugars in them. Ketchup is known for being filled with sugar. That’s why I use sugar-free ketchup when I make keto recipes. It’s a delicious option to keep it low carb, but still gives you a subtle sweetness that’s wonderful. So be sure to use ketchup that is sugar free for a keto diet, and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Can I Swap Dill Pickles For Sweet Pickles?

Yes, as long as you use sugar-free sweet pickles, they would be a great swap idea. Sweet pickles often have sugar added to them to make them taste so sweet. Look over the ingredients and make sure there isn’t any type of sugar added. When you add sweet pickles to the keto 1000 island dressing, it will taste different, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. The pickles are an important ingredient to give you some tasty tang in every bite.

How Long Does Homemade Dressing Last?

You can prepare this thousand island dressing and keep it in an airtight storage container for up to one week. It needs to be kept cold in the fridge until you are ready to use it. If you do a lot of meal prepping and planning, you will love having some of this dressing on hand for those meals.

One of my favorite ways to use 1000 island! This is a turkey lettuce wrap with swiss, 1000 island dressing, and coleslaw.

What Can I Serve Keto Thousand Island Dressing On?

Obviously, you can add this homemade dressing to your favorite salad, but there are other foods that taste amazing with it too. Here are a few ideas for you to consider trying out.

  • Burger – Grill a juicy cheeseburger and top it with a tablespoon or so of this healthy thousand island dressing. I will warn you; it’s insanely good!
  • Make it a dip – You don’t have to only use the dressing on top of foods, you can dip foods into it too. We love to dip our fresh veggies in thousand island dressing. So good!
  • Add it to a sandwich or lettuce wrap – Rubens is well known for being served with thousand island dressing, but you can also add it to any other sandwich you are making. Try it and see what you like.

Can I Make Thousand Island Dressing Spicy?

If you want to add a little bit of heat in your homemade keto dressing, that’s no problem at all. To add a little bit of spiciness, I recommend a splash or two of sriracha sauce. Add it to taste, and it will be wonderful. You can also add in some crushed red pepper flakes to add some fire to the homemade salad dressing.

  6. I have been wanting to find a healthier option for store bought thousand island! What is your favorite sugar free ketchup?

    1. when all of the ingredients will last over a month in your refrigerator why are you saying that when you combine them they will only last one week?

      1. I am not a food scientist but I’ve found that when you combine an acid (lemon juice & pickles) with mayo the result lasts a shorter period of time. This could be good a month if you do use all fresh ingredients but I prefer to play it safe and only make the amount we will use in a week or two.
