What makes this high-protein dessert special is that it uses cottage cheese as the main ingredient while still tasting like a traditional mousse.

Before You Get Started

  • Full-fat cottage cheese gives the creamiest texture, but low-fat cottage cheese works too.
  • If you’re serving this to guests, make it a few hours ahead of time. The mousse thickens as it chills and develops even better flavor.
  • Blend the cottage cheese thoroughly so the mousse is completely smooth.
  • Taste before chilling to make sure it has the right amount of sweetness for your preferences.
  • This mousse thickens slightly as it chills in the refrigerator.
  • For the best flavor, choose a cocoa powder that is not bitter.

Ingredients

  • Heavy whipping cream – This is needed to add a creamy texture to the mousse.
  • Cottage cheese – I like to use full-fat cottage cheese, but any kind, type, or brand will work. Full-fat cottage cheese creates the richest texture. Once blended, you won’t taste the cottage cheese at all.
  • Cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder gives this mousse its rich chocolate flavor.
  • Joy Filled Eats Sweetener (or see alternatives in recipe notes) – This is my go-to sweetener for all my baking needs. It contains sugar alcohol and stevia and provides the right amount of sweetness without added sugar.

How to Make Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse

whipped cream in bowl

Step One: Add the heavy cream to a large mixing bowl and whip until stiff peaks form. An electric mixer makes this easy.

Step Two: Add the rest of the ingredients to a food processor or blender. Pulse and mix until smooth. If you need to, you can mix it with an immersion blender in a large bowl.

Step Three: Fold in the whipped cream gently.

Step Four: Put the mixture into an airtight container in the fridge to thicken and chill. Eat it within a couple days.

Top Tip💡

Blend longer than you think you need to. This simple trick creates the smooth, mousse-like texture and removes any cottage cheese curds.

    Variations

    • Liquid sweeteners – If you prefer, you can add maple syrup, agave nectar, or honey. If using liquid sweeteners, you may need to reduce the amount slightly or add a bit more cocoa powder if the mousse becomes too soft.
    • Vanilla extract – Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for extra flavor and depth. You can also add peppermint extract for a fun flavor. Extracts are a game-changer in terms of adding a flavor difference.
    • Peanut butter – Blend in 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter and gently swirl a little extra on top before serving. Almond butter works too.
    • Mocha – For a mocha flavor, mix in a teaspoon of instant espresso powder.
    • Melted chocolate – If you’d like to use melted chocolate, mix it into the smooth cottage cheese in the food processor. It will help the pudding thicken.
    • Protein powder – You can easily add chocolate protein powder to turn this into even more of a chocolate protein mousse recipe! The only thing you’ll need to pay attention to is to balance so that it’s not too thick, so you might have to add more heavy cream to offset.
    • Filling – Use this chocolate cottage cheese mousse as a filling inside my Cottage Cheese Crepes for a protein-packed dessert.

    Equipment

To make this delicious dessert, you’ll need a food processor or high-speed blender. You’ll also want to have a large mixing bowl and a spatula to scrape down the sides of the blender or food processor.

    Storage

Once you make this delicious sweet treat, you can enjoy it right away or put it in an airtight container in the fridge. If you do store it, eat it within a couple of days for the best results. You’ll likely need to give it a stir again before eating.

I don’t recommend freezing this recipe because it will change the texture of the mousse.

    Common Questions

Is this mousse smooth or grainy?

When blended thoroughly, the cottage cheese becomes completely smooth and creamy. Most people would never guess cottage cheese is the secret ingredient.

Can I add different toppings to this cottage cheese recipe?

Absolutely! You can add coconut shreds, shaved chocolate, dark chocolate chips, fresh raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, or even fresh whipped cream.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes. This mousse is actually even better after chilling for a few hours. You can make it up to a day in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

    Notes

    Notes on Sweeteners:
I use my own blend of xylitol, erythritol, and stevia in my recipes. This is twice as sweet as sugar. It is comparable to Trim Healthy Mama Gentle Sweet and Truvia.
To sub in Swerve or Lakanto Monk Fruit use 1.5 times the amount of sweetener called for.

To sub in Pyure or Trim Healthy Mama Super Sweet use half the amount of sweetener called for.

Substitutions will work in most recipes. They may not work in candies, such as caramel.
