Free Guide! Feed a Family on a Low Carb Diet

In this free 5-day email series learn all my tips for incorporating a low-carb lifestyle into the life of your family.

Don’t get me wrong; I used to be like everyone else and run to the market and grab a container of pre-made dressing. I understand how convenient it is, but I’m so much happier with homemade blue cheese dressing. It has an utterly rich, smooth, and has a tangy flavor just like you’re used to.

But, when you make homemade low carb keto blue cheese dressing, you are skipping out on all those processed ingredients that are just bad for you (and have added carbs). There is no question of what is in because you put the handful of ingredients together and made it yourself when you do it at home. It can also be cheaper to make your own keto friendly dressings, especially if you've been buying the fancier refrigerated varieties.

    How Was Blue Cheese Invented?

Just for fun, I thought it would be interesting to look up where blue cheese was invented. I’m not sure if it’s accurate or not, but supposedly there was a cheesemaker that had a little too much to drink. He had a cave that was moist and for cheese. While he had been drinking, he was eating a loaf of bread and forgot it behind when he left. Shockingly, when he returned, the bread had molded, and the cheese then turned into blue cheese. Whether it’s true or not, it’s kind of a neat story, and now people can enjoy blue cheese dressing with so many foods.

You’ll also be happy to know when you eat this low carb blue cheese dressing it doesn’t just taste good; you’ll get some nutrients too — Vitamin A, calcium, zinc, magnesium, vitamin B12, phosphorus, and protein.

How To Make Blue Cheese Dressing

I know I told you that this blue cheese dressing is super easy to make, but I’m not sure I have stressed it enough. You can’t find a more simple homemade dressing recipe than this one. It is one of my favorite keto recipes. Check it out:

First Step: Mix together sour cream, mayo, garlic powder, milk of your choice (I use unsweetened almond milk), and crumbled blue cheese in a medium-sized bowl.

Expert Tip: To make a blue cheese dip just omit the milk!

Second Step: Season with salt and pepper to taste and refrigerate!

See, I told you it was really easy to make low carb blue cheese dressing at home. Now you can quickly throw together a batch whenever you get a craving. It's a great condiment for a keto diet.

What Does Blue Cheese Taste Like?

If you haven’t had blue cheese dressing before, you’ve been missing out. It’s a game-changer when it comes to many recipes! Blue cheese has a tangy flavor that’s a little bit salty and really creamy. It goes well with foods that have a vinegar base, vegetables, and salads. Anything you would put ranch dressing on is a good fit for blue cheese too.

How Do You Store Keto Blue Cheese Dressing?

Put the blue cheese dressing in the refrigerator in a glass container with a lid. You could also use plastic too, but I prefer glass because it doesn’t hold in odors as plastic does. The homemade dressing will last 5-7 days if it’s kept in the cold refrigerator. Whenever you want some, just grab it and drizzle then refrigerate again.

How Can You Tell If Dressing Has Spoiled?

When blue cheese dressing has started to spoil, it will have a very strong pungent flavor that is unappealing. The color of the dressing may look strange too. Another strong indicator is that mold will begin to develop on the top of the dressing, sides of the container, and even on the lid. If you ever notice anything like this, then don’t eat it. Throw it out and quickly make a new batch.

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup crumbled blue cheese divided
    • ½ cup mayo

    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1.5 tablespoon unsweetened almond milk or other milk of your choice
    • salt & pepper to taste

    Instructions

    • Add half the blue cheese crumbles to a blender along with the mayo, sour cream, garlic, and almond milk. Blend until smooth.
    • Stir in the remaining blue cheese and season with salt and pepper.
    • If needed, thin with additional almond milk. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

    Notes

Milk: You can use any mild-flavored to thin this dressing. Unsweetened almond milk, carton coconut milk, half and half, heavy cream, or just a little whole milk. This small of an amount won't affect the macros very much.
Substitutions: Greek yogurt works in place of the sour cream.
To Make an Iceberg Wedge Salad: to make the classic steakhouse favorite you can see in my photos just take ¼ of a head of iceberg lettuce (washed and dried), drizzle with this dressing, and then top with tomatoes, red onions, and bacon. You can add extra blue cheese if desired and even some grilled chicken to make it a complete meal.
