Making your own spices is great because you know all the ingredients and what they are. I also think that homemade Mediterranean spices can offer a unique flavor and taste to any gourmet meal. The combination of spices really takes any dish to the next level of flavor.

I’ve used this to make roasted Greek chicken, and it as the best flavor. The first time I made this savory blend, I knew that I’d found a top spice that I’d be using for all of my meat dishes. The simple steps to make this Mediterranean herb blend can be found on the recipe card below.

Ingredients

  • Dill weed – This adds a nice dill flavor to the spice.
  • Oregano – A main staple in Italian and Mediterranean meals.
  • Onion powder – For flavor.
  • Garlic powder – For flavor.
  • Lemon zest – Great for adding acidity. You can use fresh or dried. But when using fresh lemon peel it will need to be stored in the refrigerator and used within 2 weeks.
  • Salt– For flavor.
  • Black pepper – For flavor.

How to Make Mediterranean Seasoning

Step One: Add all the seasonings to a bowl.

Step Two: Stir to combine. Store in an airtight jar or container. Since this has fresh lemon zest you will want to store in the fridge.

Top Tip💡

To keep your seasoning mix as fresh as possible for as long as possible, store it in an airtight container and keep it in a cool, dark place. If you use fresh lemon zest the best place to store is the refrigerator. If you use dried lemon zest it can easily be stored in your spice pantry with all your other ingredients.

Substitutions

  • Different spices – For new recipes like this, you can easily swap in and out your favorite ingredients. I’ve added cayenne pepper for spice, sea salt in place of regular salt, brown sugar for a pop of sweetness, and even cumin seeds. Crushed red pepper adds a bit of heat.

Variations

  • Make a versatile spice blend – While there are variations that can be done to this spice recipe, you can also change it to add other flavors. Some people don’t like to add as much salt, while others want to use a specific type of pepper. Any Mediterranean herbs can be used to add a Middle East flavor to all your favorite dishes.

Once you make this simple recipe, store it in a spice container or even a mason jar. The seal needs to be airtight to keep the flavor locked in.

Common Questions

What healthy recipes can I use this DIY seasoning with?

You can use this seasoning on so many types of foods! It’s delicious on baby potatoes, great with chicken, or a fun addition to sprinkle on to other cooked meats and vegetables.

You can even turn it into a Mediterranean rub or a good dry rub to put on chicken or other proteins before you cook it. Just pair it with some olive oil so that it sticks to the meat, and you’re good.

Make an easy dip by mixing Greek yogurt, mayo, crumbled feta cheese, and seasoning to taste with this blend.

How long are homemade spices good for?

Making your own spices is a great way to extend the shelf life and flavors. As long as you’re storing the spices correctly, they should be able to be stored for 6-12 months. You’ll start to notice that the spices are getting old once their fragrance isn’t as strong.

Before I use any of my own spices, I always give them a sniff taste, shake test, and look at it. If the spice isn’t strong smelling and is losing some power, then I know it’s getting a bit older and I might want to make a new batch. If I notice visually that the spices are clumping together in the storage container, then I realize that humidity has likely gotten into the container, and I toss it out.

You can also test the clumping by shaking it as well. If the spices don’t move around inside the container, humidity has likely gotten inside and is making it all stick together.
