When 5 pm was staring at me last night and I had no clue what I was making for dinner I decided to make my husband's favorite cheeseburger into a keto hamburger casserole. That way my kids wouldn't be asking where the buns were. I didn't have to put out a bunch of toppings. And adding a microwave bag of veggies completed the meal.
When I was throwing this together last night I thought that I might want to include it in my free ebook, Easy Family Meals. But then I realized I haven't posted much this week and my faithful readers would probably like a new dinner recipe right now. That ebook is coming soon though and all of my weekly newsletter subscribers will receive a free copy. It will have the top 10 dinner recipes from my blog and a couple of ebook exclusives in a printable format. You can print it out and keep a copy handy for meal planning.
How to Make a Burger Bake
Press the seasoned ground meat into the bottom of a casserole dish. Top with any toppings that need a little longer to cook. At this point, I put on the bacon crumbles, mushrooms, and onions.
Cook the casserole for 20 minutes. Carefully drain the cooking liquid. This step is very important or you will end up with a watery burger bake. Top with the cheese and bake until the cheese is melted and the meat is thoroughly cooked.
What type of Ground Meat Should I Use?
You can use any kind of ground meat for this baked hamburgers recipe. We use a lot of ground turkey in my house because I prefer the taste and because it's cheap. My husband prefers ground beef. Ground chicken, ground venison, or ground pork can work too! Or feel free to use a combination.
Toppings for a Burger Bake
I use bacon, onions, mushrooms, and cheddar on my giant baked hamburgers. To give these a big mac flavor bake and then top with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and thousand island dressing.
Or go gourmet and use some blue cheese and arugula. Most of the time I eat a burger I still lean to American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, and a little sugar-free ketchup.
What should I Serve with a Keto Hamburger Casserole?
I serve this with a lighter vegetable such as green beans, keto coleslaw, or my garlic broccoli or on top of a green salad. For a real comfort food meal, you can serve it with keto mashed cauliflower.
