Fair warning: This spicy Greek feta dip is gonna go fast once it’s made. Inspired by tirokafteri, a spicy feta dip from Greece (that we love from a local restaurant), it’s just so good, dippable, and a great way to introduce new flavors with minimal work.

I make this all the time and love that the spice level of this creamy dip is easy to change. Some days I want more heat than others, and I love having control over that. It’s a great snack to pair with fresh veggies when you want something simple and flavorful.

Ingredients

  • Feta cheese – Use a block of a good quality feta for the best flavor. We get ours from a local Greek store whenever possible.
  • Olive oil – Extra-virgin olive oil adds richness and helps give the dip a creamier texture.
  • Onion – Finely mince it before adding.
  • Jalapeno – Remove the seeds for less heat, then finely mince. Leave some of the seeds in if you want a spicier dip.
  • Garlic cloves – Finely mince them to add plenty of garlic flavor.

How to Make Spicy Feta Dip

oil being added to bowl

Step One: Add all the feta dip ingredients to a large bowl.

Step Two: Mix with a hand mixer or potato masher until creamy and well combined. You can also make this in a food processor. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve right away or chill until you’re ready to eat.

Top Tip💡

Add a small amount of olive oil at a time depending on the texture you want. More olive oil will give the dip a creamier texture, while using less will leave it thicker and a little more crumbly.

Substitutions

  • Greek yogurt – Mix in some plain whole milk Greek yogurt for extra creaminess and a boost of protein. You may want to reduce the olive oil slightly if you add yogurt.

Variations

  • Mix-ins – Diced roasted red peppers add a pop of color and flavor. You can also mix in chopped Kalamata olives or hot peppers.
  • Spice level – Add cayenne pepper, fresh red chili pepper, or crushed red pepper flakes to turn up the heat.
  • Fresh herbs – Add a little fresh parsley, fresh dill, mint, or oregano for another layer of flavor.
  • Tangy – Add a splash of red wine vinegar or fresh lemon juice for a little extra tang.
  • Milder dip – Remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeño, or use less jalapeño for a milder version.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this spicy feta dip with fresh veggies, pita bread, pita chips, crackers, or slices of toasted baguette. It’s an easy appetizer for a party or a great addition to a mezze platter with hummus, olives, and Greek salad.

For serving, spoon the dip onto a serving plate or shallow bowl and finish it with a drizzle of olive oil. You can also sprinkle fresh parsley or red pepper flakes over the top for an easy garnish.

It also pairs well with Greek chicken or other grilled meats.

Equipment

You don’t need a lot of equipment to make this feta dip. A hand mixer and a mixing bowl are really all you need. If you have a cute serving bowl, grab that, too!

Storage

Store leftover spicy feta dip in an airtight container with a lid in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Give it a good stir before serving if the olive oil separates slightly. For the best flavor and texture, let it sit at room temperature for about 10–15 minutes before serving.

I don’t recommend freezing this recipe because the texture can change after thawing. It’s best served fresh.

Common Questions

What pairs well with feta dip?

There are so many dipping options. I’m all about fresh veggies like carrot sticks, celery, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, and sliced red bell peppers. You can also serve it with warm pita bread, pita chips, crackers, or toasted baguette.

Can I use this as a sandwich spread?

Absolutely. Spread it on toasted bread or use it on a sandwich or wrap. It’s especially good paired with roasted or Greek chicken and fresh vegetables. You can also spread it on toast for an easy snack.

Can I prepare this ahead of time?

You sure can. In fact, I think making it ahead of time and giving it some time to rest in the refrigerator is a great idea. Just mix, store in an airtight container with a lid, and serve once chilled.

How do I make the dip creamy?

The feta will give this dip a little texture, so don’t expect it to be completely smooth. Mix it well and add olive oil gradually until you reach the creaminess you like. You can also add a little plain Greek yogurt for an even creamier texture.
