Ingredients
Ground turkey - You can use any type of ground meat that you want. I like turkey because it's a lower fat content and less grease.
Garlic Salt - This gives the meat a lot of flavor. You can also just use salt and garlic powder.
Onions - I like using a sweet onion here, but a red onion would work great as well. Just be sure that it's a good size since you're stuffing the ingredients inside.
Bacon - You can't go wrong with bacon. You can use thick cut bacon, maple bacon, or even turkey bacon if you want. Just be sure to cook it until it's crispy and golden brown.
Cheddar Cheese - This is my favorite type of cheese, but you can use any block or piece of cheese that you'd like.
How to make this Burger Balls Recipe
Step One: Start by preheating the oven to 400 degrees and spraying a baking pan with non stick cooking spray.
Step Two: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey meat and salt.
Step Three: Halve an onion and fill that onion with turkey meat. Add a cube of cheese and some more ground turkey, and then top with the other half of the onion. Wrap the entire onion with two pieces of bacon.
Step Four: Put the pan in the oven and bake for 30-45 minutes until all the meat is thoroughly cooked and the bacon is crispy.
Variations
Make beef meatballs - If you want your bacon cheeseburger meatballs to be made with ground beef instead of turkey, use that instead. Just know that you will have more grease coming from the ground beef and a higher fat content when consuming. I use turkey because it's a lean meat.
Use varied seasonings - A simple way to change the flavor is to change the seasonings. You can mix in onion powder, onion soup mix, black pepper, and any other flavors that you would like. You just have to mix it right into the meat.
Change the type of cheese - While I like using cheddar cheese, you can use any type of cheese. This is what makes making your own recipes fun. If you don't have cheese cubes, you can also use cheese curds or even slices of American cheese folded to fit inside this great recipe.
Common Questions
Do I need to add anything to the meat mixture to help make it stick together while cooking?
The cheese is really the main binding agent that helps with that, but you could always add some bread crumbs into the meat mixture if you would like. Just add them to a large bowl with the ground meat, and combine with your fingers. You don't have to add a lot, but a little bit is fine.
What are fun side dishes to eat with this cheeseburger meatball recipe?
I'm a big fan of treating appetizer recipes like this as fun to eat! You can pair this dish with french fries, a side salad, or even just get a great burger sauce or special sauce and dip the burger balls right into them. Thousand Island dressing is a really good choice!
Don't forget to add your favorite toppings as well! Fresh ingredients like a cherry tomato, lettuce, a red onion, and even some fresh cilantro are all great choices to have. Basically, anything that you'd add to a burger, you can add here.
