Keto Frozen Hot Chocolate
Frozen Hot Chocolate doesn’t make much sense until you taste it. Then you realize how it is possible to capture the flavor of a hot chocolate in a frozen beverage. This frozen hot chocolate recipe is a low carb summer must-have! This easy recipe is low carb, keto, gluten-free, grain-free, sugar-free, and Trim Healthy Mama friendly.

I was blessed a few weeks ago to go to Serendipity 3 in New York City with my Great Aunt June and my daughter, who has June as her middle name in her honor. It was a lovely afternoon and I can finally cross visiting Serendipity and having one of their famous Frozen Hot Chocolates off my bucket list.
Unfortunately, about an hour after sharing one with my daughter I had an awful headache. I assume it was from the sugar. I became determined to make my own version at home that was sugar-free.
Most of my recipes come from my need to take food I love and make it Trim Healthy Mama friendly. Sometimes it is something I’ve eaten dozens of times and other times it’s something I’ve only had one but it was amazing enough to stick with me.

How to Make Frozen Hot Chocolate
It is very easy to make frozen hot chocolate. Simply put the ingredients in the blender and press the button.
The first secret ingredient in this is coconut oil. It gives a creamy texture to the drink. If you use regular coconut oil you may notice a slight coconut taste. If you use refined coconut oil it has no coconut taste.
The second is xanthan gum. Using just a pinch helps the drink stay smooth and creamy and not separate.
Ingredients for Frozen Hot Chocolate:
- heavy cream
- almond milk
- sweetener
- dark cocoa powder (or regular cocoa powder)
- vanilla
- pinch of xanthan gum, optional (helps stop the drink from separating)
- coconut oil
- ice cubes

I have your hot chocolate mix. Have you used that to make a cold drink like this?
I haven’t but I think it would work!
If using full-fat coconut milk instead of heavy cream to make it dairy-free, the amount would be the same? And using the whole thing or just the fat separeted from the top on the can left in the fridge overnight? And last thing: if the coconut milk used has already some guar gum in it, should the xanthan gum be used anyway in the same dose? (I always aim to get pure coconut milk without it, but it’s not always avaible here).
This could be also a great way to have a nutritious and delicious breakfast in these crazy hot days, thank you for reproposing this recipe!
I would try using the same amounts but you may need to experiment a little. I would shake the can of coconut milk and use the whole thing, not just the solid part. If you have xanthan gum it won’t hurt to add some. It just prevents separation.
Recipes sounds so yummy. I am lactose intolerant. what can I use and still get good results. I love many of your recipes, but would like to see more dairy free recipes.
Nikki, I have almost 200 dairy-free recipes. You can find them here: https://joyfilledeats.com/recipe-index/?swcfpc=1&fwp_recipe_filters_mobile=dairy-free
For this recipe, you can sub in a combination of full fat coconut milk and carton coconut or almond milk.
Where do you find the Trim Healthy sweetener at?
You can order it off of their website: Gentle Sweet or make my version: https://joyfilledeats.com/sweetener/
Never mind, I just saw the ice cubes. My mistake. Thanks!
HI Taryn,
I have a question. After you blend this, do you freeze it, or use ice cubes in it? It’s called frozen chocolate and I don’t see where you add any ice? Thank in advance, Susan
Got this recipe in my email today and decided I had to try it. Delicious and filling!
This looks soo good. Thank you!
This Frozen Hot Chocolate is delicious! I subbed full fat coconut milk for heavy cream because my daughter is dairy restricted for now and it was so good! Thank you! It will be a sweet treat for my 6yo and myself to enjoy!
What was the topping you used in the photo?
Whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder.
So eager to try this! Thank you! I have all the ingredients, including the sweetener mix from your recipe 😊
I am thinkingof adding “coffee ice cubes” and make a frozen mocha!
I tried this and it was yummy! Something different than the usual smoothie. Question: mine was pretty runny – is it supposed to be a thinner drink or more thick and slushy? I could just adjust with more ice. 🙂
Did you use the xanthan gum or glucomannan? That will help thicken it. And yes, you can add more ice.
I made this tonight and it’s delicious! Very rich flavor! Felt like I was indulging in a fancy chocolaty sweet treat. Thanks for the recipe.
Really love this drink, but the coconut oil leaves an after-taste…would it be okay to omit?
Sure. The coconut oil does add to the creaminess though. Are you using refined coconut oil?
