Baking Spice Mix
This Baking Spice Mix is perfect to enrich all your baked goods. It includes five essential baking spices that can elevate banana bread or give a burst of flavor to your morning French toast. Using this spice blend is the perfect way to add delicious flavor with minimal effort.

I’m a big fan of making my own spices in small batches. I like having them on hand for any baking recipe that I’m making. I really do think that making them at home gives a better taste. Plus, you can have fun combining spices to create a unique spin on dishes. It’s like being a chemist in the kitchen, where in the end you get to taste test your creation and results.
Once the sweet spice aroma fills your house, you’ll be hooked. Try it in a spice cake or even hot chocolate!

How to Make this Baking Spice Mix

Step One: Add all the ingredients to a small bowl and mix. Store in an airtight container and keep in a cool place for up to 6 months.
Top Tip💡
I always save old, empty spice containers to store my homemade spice mixture. Once they’re empty, I keep them in a unique space in my spice cabinet so that they’re handy to grab and fill. I then make a label, and it’s done.
Variations
- Spicy – Add some cayenne pepper to the mix to kick up the heat. Black pepper can also add some zing.
- Spices – Change up the spice combo. Add some cardamom, mace, or anise.

Equipment
Making this blend is a breeze. All you need is a small jar or mason jar with a lid, and you’re ready to pour, stir, and store.
Storage
Once the spice blend is made, be sure to store it in a cool, dark place. Store in an airtight container or glass jar. It shouldn’t be stored in the fridge, but it should be stored in your spice cabinet or area where you keep the rest of your spices.
Storing it properly is the best way to keep it as fresh as possible for as long as possible.

Common Questions
Use this all purpose blend in your favorite fall traditional recipes that call for pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice. It can also replace the spices in any recipe that calls for a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and other sweet spices. It is great in desserts such as pies, cookies, puddings, breads, fruit crumbles, and cakes. But it is just as good in sweet breakfast options like pancakes, waffles, hot cereals, and crepes!
They do, but they don’t spoil as food does. Instead, they lose their flavor and taste the longer that they sit in the jar or on the shelf. You can check to see if a spice is still good by sniffing it. If there is no scent, that’s a big indicator that it’s no longer going to be good to use. And while that won’t make the food unsafe if you use it, it won’t have the same amount of flavor that it would if the spice were fresh.
The other way to know if a spice is no longer good to use is if it’s hard in texture or turning clumpy. This means that moisture has gotten to it, and it’s not going to work the same way in recipes. This is why having an airtight container is key so that humidity doesn’t affect the outcome.
