Ingredients

Ground sausage – You can buy this already ground and ready to use from the grocery store.

Parmesan cheese – For the topping. I love to add freshly grated for the most flavor.

Egg – Helps the ingredients bind together to form the meatball mixture.

Dried minced onion – For flavor. I find it easier to use dried onion than chop up a small piece of fresh onion.

Italian seasoning – To give the meatballs that Italian taste.

Garlic powder – For flavor. Again, it is easier to use garlic powder or dried minced garlic in this recipe than chop up a fresh clove of garlic.

Salt & Pepper – For taste. Since the cheese is naturally salty you can omit the added salt if you prefer.

Variations

Make turkey meatballs – You can easily use ground turkey meat instead of ground pork or pork sausage for the tender meatballs. Lean ground beef is another option to use for the meat mixture.

Use spicy Italian sausage – Simple meatballs like this can easily be altered in terms of spice level. That’s the great thing about making them at home! You can turn these pork meatballs into spicy pork meatballs by using spicy pork meat.

Add toppings – Top these stovetop pork sausage meatballs with any topping that you want. You can top it with red pepper flakes, homemade marinara sauce, fresh garlic and black pepper, or fresh parsley as well.

Common Questions

What should I pair with these flavorful Italian meatballs to create a delicious dinner?

You can pair these cooked meatballs with classic spaghetti noodles or enjoy a big batch in a bowl topped with freshly grated parmesan cheese. Making a batch of garlic bread and a nice side salad is the perfect way to pair these delicious meatballs with a well-rounded meal.

Can I cook these in a cast iron pan?

Absolutely. Cast iron skillet cooking is never a bad idea. Just be sure to get the cast iron pan hot before adding the pork, and then follow the rest of the recipe card to complete this easy recipe.

How do I know when the meatballs are done cooking?

You can determine if the pork is thoroughly cooked by using a meat thermometer. After cooking the meatballs in the pan, simply insert the thermometer into the center of a meatball. Once the temperature reaches a minimum of 160 degrees, the meatballs are completely cooked and can be safely consumed once they have cooled.

What can I use leftover meatballs for?

The fun part about making this recipe is that you can eat the meatballs just as they are the next day or make killer meatball subs as well. Utilize any leftover meatballs by making delicious meatball sandwiches, where every mouthful is packed with flavor from the combination of bread and toppings.

Can I bake these meatballs in the oven?

You can, although it will be a longer process. Baking the meatballs in the oven doesn’t require any changes to the italian sausage meatballs recipe besides the time of baking.

You will need to use your meat thermometer to check the doneness of the meatballs around the 20-minute mark. As long as the temperature reading shows 160 degrees, you can assume that they’re baked and ready to start the cooling down process.

  1. Love these! Favorite meal and we eat them regularly. I am wondering if you know if these freeze well? If i left the sauce off and just froze the meatballs? I am concerned they might crumble.

    1. I cook these on the stove top but if you want to bake them you can at 400 for 20-25 minutes. Just check them with a meat thermometer. They need to be 160.
