Ingredients
Ground beef - Choose your favorite type of ground beef.
Eggs - Large eggs work great.
Dry mustard - Adds an excellent flavor to the meat.
Garlic powder - Pairs well with the other added seasonings.
Salt - To taste. A general rule of thumb is to use 1-2 - one teaspoon of salt per pound of meat.
Black pepper - To taste. I normally use about ¼ - ½ teaspoons per pound of meat.
Small onion - I like to use a sweet onion for this dish.
Olive oil - Avocado oil would also be a good choice.
Mushrooms - Fresh mushrooms are a great addition. You can use white mushrooms or portabello mushrooms.
Beef broth - To make the gravy.
Sour cream - Adds richness to the gravy.
How to Make Keto Salisbury Steak
Step One: Mix the ground chuck, dry seasonings, eggs, and onion in a bowl. Work the meat with your hands to make sure that all the ingredients are mixed well. Separate the mixture into 8 equal portions, and then shape them into beef patties.
Step Two: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil and then the meat patties. You might need to cook in two batches.
Step Three: Brown the patties on one side, which will take about 5m minutes. Flip and repeat. Take the patties out of the skillet and put them on a paper towel.
Step Four: Use a spoon and carefully remove all but about 2 tablespoons of grease from the skillet.
Step Five: Add the beef broth and the mushrooms to the skillet and then scrape the bottom of the pan to remove any pieces. I use a wooden spoon to do this so I don’t scrape my skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the mushrooms are soft. Stir in the sour cream.
Step Six: Put the cooked patties back into the skillet and turn them in the gravy to coat them.
Step Seven: Serve over creamy mashed cauliflower.
Variations
Add seasonings - For more flavor, you can add onion powder or even a little bit of cayenne pepper.
Add thickening powder - If you want to make the homemade gravy a little thicker, you can add a little xanthan gum for a thickening power boost. I prefer the keto gravy not to be thick, so I don't do this when I make this homemade Salisbury steak.
Common Questions

The burger patties of this recipe are different because there are more! Hamburger steak is made using simple ingredients, while the meat mixture of this low carb Salisbury steak has a few more additions.

Nope, it's actually different. These tender hamburger steaks have a few different ingredients added to them, plus they're served with their own homemade creamy mushroom sauce. While the process is similar to meatloaf, the end result and flavor are much different.
What do I serve with this savory dish?
Cauliflower mash pairs well with the texture of the meat and the creamy mushroom gravy. Any of your favorite recipes that are low carb would be perfect for pairing with this simple dish.
Side salads with your favorite salad dressings are always a great option, and cauliflower rice would be awesome, too.
