How to Choose Asparagus

One of my favorite things about spring is asparagus. Asparagus is a great vegetable. You can steam, sauté, roast, or eat it raw as part of a salad. I always make sure to get fresh, young asparagus bundles from the farmer’s market because they’re so delicious!

You want the stalks to feel firm and the tips to also feel firm and look fresh and not mushy. If the asparagus spears look wrinkly it has begun drying out. You don’t want wrinkly asparagus.

How to Prepare Asparagus

I wash the asparagus and then just bend the bottoms until the woody ends snap off. I will do this 3-4 at a time. The lower part of the stalk is too hard to chew so it needs to be removed.

You can roast it, air fry it, grill it, or boil it, but anyway, asparagus is delicious. I think you should try my recipe for oven roasted asparagus sometime! It’s so easy to make and tastes great.

How to Make Bacon Wrapped Asparagus in the Air Fryer

To cook them properly though you need an extra step for this dish – wrapping each stalk with bacon before putting it on your plate makes all the difference in flavor and texture that one could ask for when eating these scrumptious green vegetables.

Step One: Wrap each asparagus stalk with a slice of bacon.

Expert Tip: Using thinner bacon is best for this bacon wrapped asparagus air fryer recipe because by the time thick-cut bacon cooks the asparagus would be over-cooked.

Step Two: Spray the air fryer basket with non-stick olive oil cooking spray. Put the asparagus in a single layer into the basket. My Instant Pot with the air fryer lid has 2 racks so I put half on the bottom and half on the top. If your basket does have two racks you may need to cook this in two or more batches.

Step Three: Air fry for about 15 minutes at 400. You want the bacon to be crisp and the asparagus to be tender. Don’t worry if the bacon unwraps a little bit, they are still delicious.

Variations

Spices – Season the asparagus before wrapping it with a piece of bacon. You can season it with black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, or any other spice your family enjoys.

Cheese – Sprinkle some fresh Parmesan cheese over this bacon wrapped asparagus air fryer recipe before serving. Or put a slice of firm cheese in with the asparagus. Cheeses that you can grill like paneer and halloumi are the best choices.

Dips – Serve with some homemade keto blue cheese dressing or keto thousand island dressing to dip into.

Chicken – Make a complete entree by adding a piece of chicken tenderloin with each piece of asparagus.

Common Questions

Can I Use Frozen Asparagus

Frozen asparagus will not work for this recipe. I have tried freezing asparagus before, but it didn’t work out so well. It was difficult to thaw the spears without them breaking apart and the texture was off.

What happens if you put bacon in the air fryer?

The best way to cook bacon is by using an air fryer! Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Asparagus is quick, fast, and easy.

Does bacon make a mess in the air fryer?

Bacon releases grease when it cooks so of course there will some oil in the bottom of the air fryer. I don’t think it is any harder to clean than baking bacon in the oven or frying it in a skillet on the stovetop.
