If you’ve become accustomed to eating and enjoying a keto lifestyle, you may be starting to wonder about other things...like wine! I know that drinking any form of alcohol while on a low carb diet can be super confusing. There are many different opinions out there on the subject. I’m excited to share what I have learned about drinking wine on keto, so you can indulge a little every once in a while too.

Can You Drink Wine On Keto?
Wine is something many of us enjoy drinking to wind down after a long day or when hanging out with friends. It can be difficult to give up alcoholic beverages completely. The secret to your success and still being able to drink a little bit of wine is….moderation! Everything about drinking wine while on keto is not to make it a habit. Have a little bit here and there instead of drinking it daily.
Depending on how many carbs you regularly consume in a day will affect how much wine you can drink. It’s important to enjoy a glass (or two), but not push yourself out of ketosis. If you know ahead of time that you will be sipping on some wine, you can arrange your diet that day to adjust for the carbs from the wine. If you aren’t overly strict on your carb intake, you may not need to make any adjustments at all. Simply do what works best for you and your body.
How Many Carbs Are In Wine?
On average, a glass of wine can have around 2-5 net carbs. Each brand and variety vary some, so it’s a good idea to do a little research before you choose what you want. The only bad part is that bottles of wine do not have a nutrition label. This means you may need to peek around the internet to find out how many carbs the variety you are interested in has. I realize it takes a little bit of time, but I recommend making a list of wines that will work for you. Then you can have access to it anytime you need it.
What Kind Of Wine Is Okay To Drink?
When reaching for a glass of wine, you should opt for something that is dry. Sweet wines are loaded with sugars and aren’t going to be good for a low carb diet. If you are used to drinking sweet wines before you started eating low carb, this can be an adjustment. Sip on dry wine slowly, and you will get used to the flavors, and it will become a delicious treat for you.
You can choose either a dry white wine or a dry red wine. Both are great options and will give you a lower amount of carbs than sweet wines would.
Another option besides dry wine would be champagne. It’s bubbly and flavorful too. So you get the entire experience of feeling those champagne bubbles in your mouth. Plus, most varieties of champagne are only around 1-2 net carbs per serving. When wanting wine on keto champagne can be a great choice!
How Many Ounces Is Considered A Glass Of Wine?
I know it’s tempting to get an extra-large glass and call it a “glass of wine,” but in reality, each serving is only 5 ounces. You’ll need to take this into consideration, especially if you are adjusting your food intake for the day.
How Much Wine on Keto Is Okay?
The amount of wine you should drink is going to vary greatly from person to person. You should consider what you are drinking as well as how many carbs you are allowing for the wine.
The most important thing to realize is that your alcohol tolerance probably won’t be the same as it was before you started eating keto. When you aren’t eating low carb, many people eat foods like bread, crackers, and other carb-filled foods before drinking. This actually allows the absorption of the alcohol to be a lot slower. When you eat low carb, there isn’t really anything in your stomach to help absorb it. So, this means it can take a lot less alcohol to make you feel tipsy than it used to.
If you are planning on drinking more than one or two glasses of wine, you’ll want to be sure to drink plenty of water in addition to the wine, so you don’t end up with a headache the next day.
One way I save on both the expense of wine and the carb count is to turn it into SANGRIA! I mix it with a sweetened flavored tea and it's amazing. See my Apple Cider Sangria and Keto Sangria.
